First formal dinner entry for this blog!

DSA-Mystique, originally uploaded by Camemberu.

The Down Syndrome Association of Singapore (DSA) held a formal dinner event called Mystique, as part of its annual fund-raising activity. Hubby's company generously sprung for a table, so we got invites. It was quite an entertaining evening with dances, fashion/jewellery catwalks, local singers (Zul Sutan of Tanya was da bomb!) and a charity auction (OMG, somebody plonked down S$16,000 for a beeeautiful silk Persian carpet!). President SR Nathan graced the occasion hosted by husband-wife celebrity duo Lim Yu Beng and Tan Kheng Hua.

OK, I didn't really have high gastronomic hopes as this was held at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel but I thought I'd blog about it anyway as a remembrance of the event. It was a simple Western-style four-course dinner. The appetiser of grilled salmon was probably what I liked the most. The fruity relish and roe combined well with the fish. Normally I prefer salmon raw but this was not too bad.

Vegetarian Minestrone Soup, originally uploaded by Camemberu.

Umm, this was...tomato-ey. Yes, it had chunks of carrots, onion, zucchini, cabbage and potato but all I could taste was salty tomato juice. Did not finish this high-sodium soup.

Main course of baked chicken was so-so. Thinner parts a little tough and thicker parts a little bland although tender. I liked the sauteed mushrooms. Not enough gooseliver sauce for me!

The banana chocolate tart at the bottom was excessively sweet. The ice cream was fine, so that's what I finished. Coffee and tea rounded up the dinner.

But anyway, food was not the focal point. It was quite a successful event overall for DSA - great attendance and audience participation. We brought our baby girl Nadine along and she proved quite popular with colleagues, friends and strangers alike.

It was so nice to see her cardiac surgeon Mr Shankar and his lovely wife Dr Bhavani (a neonatologist very passionately involved with Down Syndrome children) at the next table. They recognised Nadine even though she had grown so much since the last time they saw her (the heart surgery was done almost nine months ago). Mr Shankar was also very generous in bidding for items in the charity auction - he even 'donated' the first item he bid for (a painting by a child with Down Syndrome) for re-auction, while giving his auction sum to DSA. We were very touched by him and others who contributed to the event.
