Diandin Leluk Takeaway Counter

Diandin Leluk takeaway counter, originally uploaded by Camemberu.

Golden Mile Complex is Singapore's "Little Thailand" and it's a whole different world in there. The atmosphere can be a tad rundown and seedy but it's also where you can get some authentic Thai eats. The Diandin Leluk restaurant in there is pretty well-known. I was quite charmed by their takeaway counter offering all kinds of snacks, desserts and even salads.

Thai Desserts, originally uploaded by Camemberu.

I took home a pack of Thai desserts, made mainly from tapioca and coconut. The yellow one (bottom middle) is a strong durian flavoured one. The purple one is pulut hitam (black glutinous rice). I love the creamy coconut-water chestnut jelly on the bottom right.

I couldn't resist these, originally uploaded by Camemberu.

I was surprised to see deep-fried pork skin or pork scratchings(?) sold as snacks. I didn't know the Thai liked them too. I do know Filipinos have their version called tsitsaron or chicarron.

Mmmh, if you love your fried pork lard bits in your food like I do, you will probably like these too. Even so, I can only take a few bites at a time - but that's mainly because they're so salty (five times the sodium of potato chips? I believe it!). They also look like the mock dried fish maw (made from puffed pork skin), so I'm tempted to throw a few into a soup to see how it goes.

Garlic Fried Pork Rind, originally uploaded by Camemberu.

The red, fiery looking one wasn't spicy as I thought it might be. It's just very heavily laced/browned with garlic. They even included the garlic skins which are fried to a crisp! Well, watch out for some garlic bits in there which are bitter (as is normal when overfried).

Hmm. Well, this is like a little preview. I must go try their restaurant some day. Also curious about the many other smaller eateries there, but I really don't know which ones are good.
