Want Want Pig Organ Soup and Bak Kut Teh
Ahh, a nice peppery hot bowl of pig organ soup is perfect for a rainy day. Of all the pig innards, I pretty much only eat the stomach and intestines (no kidneys or liver for me). I also appreciate a broth with good body, not some insipid diluted soup. This stall at Block 27A Commonwealth Avenue (right next to Queenstown MRT) does not disappoint. The soup tastes like it's had pork solidly boiled in it for a long time and the salted vegetables lend a light tangy note. The pig stomach slices are beautifully tender. Best of all, the meatballs taste really savoury instead of floury. It's like they have cuttlefish bits in them, you can see the dark purple bits. The bowl above is a special request for pig stomach and meatballs only (S$4, with rice).
Prices have gone up, as you can see from the stickers covering the old prices. But so long as they don't compromise on quality, the little bit extra is worth it. Wang Wang Pig Organ Soup also serves bak kut teh and braised pork trotters but I haven't tried those yet.

I used to love this when my grandma made it. But I can't eat that now, as innards are not good for my arthritis. :( I do miss it once in a while.

Kenny: you're just missing lots of cholesterol, your doctor would say! Most organ meats are quite an acquired taste - I still stay away from half of them! Perhaps you can start with tongue? Braised pig's tongue is yummy!
I remembered this! Had it some time back before heading to Ikea. Yum!

ReplyDeleteAnother place worth a try is the Pig Organ Soup at Serangoon Gardens Market Hawker Center. Simply wicked, NO ONE has beaten its #1 position in my belly till now. Try it an let me know what you think.
Ha.. One of my favourite pig organ soup stall. Was a regular patron even before the renovation of the place. What I like about this stall is that even though the prices were raised they didn't compromise on the portions. I remember paying $4 at a food court with watery soup and ingredients I could gobble up in one mouth.
