Eight Treasures Tea 八宝茶 ("Ba Bao Cha") is a beautiful tea. I love gazing at the "treasures" - the colourful fruits, flowers and tea leaves chosen for prized health benefits.
Ingredients for 八宝茶 ("Ba Bao Cha") or Eight Treasures Tea vary slightly from recipe to recipe. The cup above is from Si Chuan Dou Hua, which serves this as their signature tea :
- Wolfberries (full of antioxidants!)
- Red dates
- Chrysanthemum
- Dried longan
- Jasmine or Long Jing tea leaves
- Mai Dong (Lilyturf root)
- Dried lily buds
- Rock sugar
The gongfu tea masters at Si Chuan Dou Hua are also a sight to behold. Swift, graceful and extremely precise, they turn tea-brewing into a performance art. Yes, those kettles are filled with hot water. Don't try this at home - it takes years of martial arts and gymnastics training, not to mention intricate understanding of tea leaves and brewing.
Besides quenching your thirst, Eight Treasures Tea also purportedly reduces body heat, promotes digestion, enhances appetite and relieves fatigue. It calms the nerves, and restores vital "qi" and blood. Simply marvellous, to say the least, but I mostly just enjoy the soothing comfort it provides.
