Crystal Jade Carnival to raise S$100,000 for World Vision
Crystal Jade is celebrating its 20th anniversary with its first Culinary Carnival featuring signature dishes, cooking demos, quizzes, live performances and competitions. All profits from this carnival will be donated to World Vision, a humanitarian organisation that works with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice.
The three-day event will run 5-7 August 2011 at the atrium of nex (Serangoon MRT), right outside the Crystal Jade Kitchen outlet there.
Crystal Jade Culinary Concepts Holding Chairman and CEO Mr Ip Yiu Tung and Mr James Quek, Executive Director of World Vision Singapore signed an MOU to commit raising S$100,000 for charity.
Eighty per cent of the funds raised will go to the One Life Fund bursary scheme, administered by Tan Tock Seng Hospital Community Charity Fund - Patient Care Centre. The fund will help children from HIV-affected families go to school. The rest will go to World Vision developments in rural Vietnam.
Guest of honour Mr Zaqy Mohamad, MP for Chua Chu Kang, officiated at the Crystal Jade Carnival.
The carnival is Crystal Jade's way of celebrating with as many people as possible, thanking Singaporeans for the support in the past twenty years. The chain also saw its 100th outlet open this year in the region.
Today at the launch, we had chefs giving demos on how to make la mian and sugar art.
Imagine making la mian so fine, each thread can go through the eye of a needle. I joined the little contest for audience participation. The la mian dough is a lot softer than I thought (it's not PlayDoh!), and actually will pull itself, thanks to gravity. But to control it so that every strand is of equal thinness...now that's where you need some skill (and a lot of practice).
The chef demonstrating "Karate La Mian"! The force of the dough slapping down is so great, it breaks the wooden boards!
There will be 12 booths, each representing a Crystal Jade dining concept. You can sample dishes offered by the different brands from casual to fine-dining, all in one place. Crispy shrimp paste chicken wings, pork knuckles, Teochew style roast duck, braised beef ribs, roast pork belly, jelly fish, steamed chicken marinated with Chinese wine, sweet and sour pork, and Korean kimchi and stir-fried glutinous rice dough. I liked the black pepper seabass with mushrooms. There was even an unusual dish of pork cartilage in curry gravy!
Carnival coupons will be sold in S$30 books, available at all Crystal Jade outlets or via the carnival hotline at 6512-0800. You'll get to redeem a 500ml bottle of Sunbeam Sunflower oil too, with every S$30 book. Buy using Citibank credit cards and you'll get an extra S$5 voucher within the book.
There's Peking Duck as well! But prepare to jostle with eager aunties for this!
I liked these cute mini bottles of Coke and A&W. Very collectible!
The programme is jam-packed with activities. Take a look and see which of the chef demos (kim chi, sugar art, snow-skin mooncake, longevity peach cake, cupcake decoration, wantons, Shanghainese appetisers, pork dumplings, la mian) and competitions you're keen on. Come on down and join in the fun. It's for a good cause.
And hey, there's free candy floss for kids!
