Advertorial
I am sure most of you would have seen or heard of the "It's My Turn" website that's the focus of this year's Total Defence campaign. I wrote about it here too. Besides the fun quiz, there is also a section where you can actively participate by pledging a social initiative.
I've done one up.
It's called Discover the Singapore You've Not Seen. I think we all love travel, but there are many places in Singapore itself that we haven't explored. Once in a while, I find myself in a neighbourhood that's totally new and wonder why I didn't check it out sooner.
Food is a fun way to discover new places. Visit a street you've not gone to before, eat from a totally new place, try a different cuisine, and just enjoy discovering. Grab some friends, it'll be fun!
Even though I know which places are safe, tried and tested, I am always yearning to go somewhere new. Well, it's true we're not always rewarded with good food, but that makes a good find even more valuable!
I want to explore more of Balestier, Upper Paya Lebar Road, the Thomson area, Woodlands (crazily enough), Greenwood Avenue, Simpang Bedok, Jurong West, Ang Mo Kio, Tampines, and even Little India, Arab Street and Chinatown (many little alleys with new eateries). And that fried oyster omelette at Upper Serangoon Road!
There are lots more activities you can browse and click to join. Some of the popular ones are "Visit a Local Bookstore" and "Sleep in Saturdays" (not a bad idea!). Shoot more hoops? Must be from the Jeremy Lin-sanity going on!
Some others are also good - putting aside mobile devices and actually having a conversation instead of tweeting/facebooking/MSN-chatting! Support a local artiste, hold the door for others, Vegetarian Mondays, and even "meet up with your cousin"! I'm all for "Leaving Work at 6pm" because work-life balance is important. But I don't work office hours, so I'll just bug everyone else to leave work on time!
What social initiative would you start? And which ones would you join? Come lah, join mine!
