Laksania: Social Enterprise Helping Disabled Excel, Serving Fantastic Food with Soul
Laksania's kitchen churns out regional laksa varieties (Singapore, Kelantan, Sarawak, Penang), with pastes made from scratch. There's even a vegetarian version they pioneered. But not everyone knows that the kitchen is a haven that provides gainful employment and training for the disabled - people with autism, Down Syndrome, mental disabilities, etc.
Meet the big heart behind this social enterprise - Madam Sim Sin Sin, who gave up a cushy CEO job to do something for these folks who are marginalised not by their choice. She's found ways to help them excel, and credits them for the consistently excellent food and service. "Look at what they can do, not what they can't. Without them, I cannot run Laksania," she says.
Despite unexpected setbacks, she's persevering and refusing to give up the social enterprise part of her business. Along the way, she's met some kind people who helped give their time and expertise. And with her wealth of experience with training the disabled, she's poised to help other companies who are interested in doing social good.
There's soul in this food. Read the full story on Yahoo Makanation:

One of my more memorable interviews. It's heartwarming to see efforts motivated by kindness instead of corporate greed. I personally like the laksas they serve - each one tastes different, and beautifully so. The laksa goreng blew me away - it's almost better than char kway teow, which I fiercely love.
