Have you seen the Property Brothers on HGTV? Realtor Drew and contractor Jonathan Scott help people get their dream home at the fraction of what a move-in ready house costs. The twin brothers transform an affordable fixer upper (usually a dated house that needs work and repairs) with incredible design. Dream home within a budget. Isn't that what we all want?
Well, HGTV only just started two months ago. So I won't be surprised if many of you haven't seen the Property Brothers at work. The channel is on free preview until end June, so check it out if you haven't.
It's my favourite channel right now...I don't even watch TV normally, but I will tune in just to see the mind-blowing renovations the Scott brothers come up with.
But what I find is unique to their show is its vibe - cheery, down-to-earth and easy-going. The brothers come across as genuine and good-natured, even though they have playful moments poking fun at each other. You can't help but like them and want to trust them.
HGTV Asia brought the Property Brothers out to Asia (Manila, KL and Singapore) to help celebrate the channel's launch. Here they are at Orchard Central, where a pretty sizeable crowd showed up with enthusiastic support. If you've seen the show, normally Drew is in a snazzy suit and Jonathan is in casual contractor gear, but for the meet-and-greet, they swapped dress codes. Actually a few people got them mixed up!
Jonathan is an illusionist in his spare time and Drew just picked up the guitar. So they entertained the crowd with a magic trick and a song. Oh yes, and Drew gives a stellar tip on renovating right in the beginning.
The MC Lester Leo also did a pretty good job working the crowd; the twins thought we were super enthusiastic.
What Jonathan did while Drew was not looking! Covered Drew's face on the poster with a canvas bag! But their sibling rivalry is only play; their close bond is unmistakable. On a Class 95FM interview, when asked to describe each other in three words, Jonathan said without hesitation, "My best friend" leaving Drew to sheepishly say "Oh that hair"!
HGTV also had a Housewarming Party the next day at the picturesque Burkhill Hall, in the Botanic Gardens. The colonial bungalow became party pad, where more fans got to meet the brothers in an exclusive, invite-only event.
Here they are with the Scripps Network Interactive Asia Pacific family. The company also distributes network brands like Asian Food Channel, Cooking Channel, DIY, Fine Living, Food Network, and Travel Channel.
I am looking forward to see the other shows featuring Drew and Jonathan. "Buying and Selling" premieres 9pm on Sunday 8 March. This one shows the other side of moving to a new house - selling your existing one. Jonathan helps make it a showstopper in just 10-12 days, and Drew helps to sell it at an ideal price that will help the homeowners move to a better place.
Meanwhile, Singapore seemed to score points with the brothers architecturewise. They also brushed up on Chinese New Year greetings before coming to Asia. Follow their Instagram!
