Naga refers to the mythical dragon or water serpent that pervades Lao folklore, and the three houses are probably blessed with the creature's energy with the name 3 Nagas.
You'll spot the 3 Nagas easily in town with the dark crimson 1952 Citroen or cream-coloured 1956 Mercedes Benz parked outside. These vintage vehicles are available for airport transfers or tours around Luang Prabang. That's just so cool!
The 1898 Lamoche House has seven rooms and has been restored with a gorgeous spiral staircase. The Lamoche family started an ice cream shop that was so good, they became the ice cream purveyors to Lao royalty. They still sell ice cream today; you must try some at the shop across the road or at the restaurant!
The Khamboua House is a jewel of Lao traditional architecture, built in 1903 by one of King Sisavong's counselors. It has eight rooms, each uniquely styled with a distinctive character. They just look so romantic.
The exotic hardwoods for the structure and flooring were brought in by elephants crossing the Nam Khan river, and the walls are "tarchis" made of lime screed on bamboo.
The best part? The 3 Nagas Restaurant offers seriously good Lao-inspired nosh. It was awarded "Best Lao Restaurant" in Luang Prabang. Yes, that ice cream is divine, some of the best I've tried. Lucky Lao royalty.
The restaurant has lovely mango trees in the courtyard too. The location in the center of town puts you within a short walking distance to major tourist attractions such as more than 30 temples, two rivers and the markets.
Every morning, you will also get to see the monks passing by collecting alms. Feel free to join in the giving and give karma a boost.
