Jean-Georges Vongerichten Opens Singapore Restaurant at COMO Dempsey

One of New York’s most celebrated chefs, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, opens The Dempsey Cookhouse & Bar at COMO Dempsey on March 3rd 2017.

Inspired by Dempsey Hill’s natural surroundings and Singapore’s multi-cultural and cosmopolitan background, chef Jean-Georges has created an effortlessly elegant restaurant, his first in Southeast Asia.

Egg Caviar
Designed by renowned architect and designer, Paola Navone, signature elements like an open kitchen elevates the cooking process into performance art, while communal dining makes the experience more familial and relaxed.

The casual but refined 5,845-sq ft restaurant-and-bar has a seating capacity of 160, including two private rooms and an outdoor terrace that can accommodate up to 24 and 32 guests, respectively.

Black truffle and fontina cheese pizza
Diners can expect his indulgent signatures such as the Egg Caviar (previous photo) and the Black Truffle and Fontina Pizza (above).

You'll also find unique cocktails and specialty concoctions inspired by Asian flavours complementing the contemporary menu.

Steamed shrimp salad

Said Chef Jean-Georges of the new restaurant: “Singapore’s modern appeal and burgeoning culinary scene is a dream for many top chefs, and I’m excited to open The Dempsey Cookhouse & Bar amidst this vibrant dining landscape. Our specially curated menu showcases the culinary innovations and refined style that runs deep within the DNA of every Jean-Georges restaurant. We hope that every guest can taste the passion that is infused in every morsel.”

Trafalgar Survey: Most Popular 2017 Long-Haul Holidays for Singaporeans

Can you guess which long-haul destination Singaporeans are leaning towards in 2017?

Scandinavia came out tops as the most favoured European region, and Ireland is the favourite European country Singaporeans want to visit. Iceland and Finland were a close second and third. Iceland, I can imagine, is extra popular because they say the Northern Lights are dimming for a decade soon (greatly exaggerated though).

Bintan Lagoon Resort has undergone some refurbishment in 2016, so there are new things afoot at this resort that's been a favourite of many Singaporeans. I still remember the last time they upgraded the facilities and added the direct ferry terminal (super convenient).

Which do you like better? Sizzling yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) or a good slab of steak? Well, actually, the way of grilling matters less than the quality of the meat. Renga-Ya at CHIJMES offers both styles of cooking in one place, with prime wagyu from Hokkaido and Kagoshima, Japan.

Riverside Grilled Fish (江边城外) at Raffles City

Oh, what a gorgeous grilled fish topped with dried red chillies and aromatics!

Riverside Grilled Fish 江边城外 at Raffles City is another of my favourite discoveries of last year. It serves Chong Qing-styled grilled whole fishes served with a variety of sauces - a concept the founders discovered quite by accident while pouring mala sauce onto grilled fish. The restaurant chain has 54 outlets in 12 cities in China, and we are fortunate to have its first overseas outlet in Singapore.

You get to pair the signature whole grilled fish – Red Tilapia (S$35.00), Sea Bass (S$35.00), Black Promfret (S$38.00) or Garoupa (S$42.00) – with any of the eight accompanying sauces.

Their 香辣味 Signature Fragrant Spicy Sauce (above) looks killer but it's actually not THAT spicy. I believe the dishes here have been tweaked to suit local palates. The main ingredients include dried chilli, diced spring onions, sesame, yellow beans and peanuts.

Canon Announces EOS M6, 77D and 800D Cameras

Canon today announced five new camera products that aim to provide greater convenience while upholding excellent image quality. Oh the upgrade bug! I'm tempted to go for one of these and sell my existing Canon EOS 70D. I still have my trusty 400D which served me exceptionally well from 2008 - 2015. And a really old film SLR...hmm, I really need to let go.

Here are the brief descriptions:

EOS M6 and EVF-DC2

The EOS M6 is the latest addition to Canon’s mirrorless range of cameras designed as modern all-rounder reflecting the best balance of convenient portability and easy functionality. Equipped with advanced technologies which are adopted from the professional EOS range cameras, the compact-size EOS M6 weighs approximately 390 grams (including the body, battery and card) and achieves high speed and a sharply precise AF that is capable of capturing fast moving subjects in still or videos. Available in sophisticated black graphite and vintage silver and black combination, the EOS M6 packs a punch with the new APS-C sensor and DIGIC 7 image processor to deliver high image clarity with low noise levels.

The EVF-DC2 is the optional Electronic View Finder.

EOS 77D

The new EOS 77D is the latest DSLR model with the world’s fastest AF speed. EOS 77D encapsulates the latest of Canon’s cutting-edge imaging technology including Dual Pixel CMOS AF system (DAF), DIGIC 7 image processor with high resolution 24.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor. These are the advanced technology which powers the world’s fastest AF focusing speed of 0.03 seconds during live view. Akin to premium models, the EOS 77D also features a top LCD display panel that reflects setting information such as shutter speed, aperture value, ISO and exposure levels, while the two control dials allow users a higher level of control.

I notice that the wi-fi gets its own physical button now.

EOS 800D

Untitled
The EOS 800D is designed for beginners looking for superior quality images and the convenience of mobility. Designed with simplicity as a focus, the EOS 800D boasts a host of advanced functions such as the cutting-edge Dual Pixel CMOS Auto-Focus (DAF), a first for an entry-level DSLR model, a 24.2 megapixel CMOS sensor, and the latest DIGIC 7 image processor propels the EOS 800D to produce brilliant pictures and videos. The lighting fast AF speed will empower users to capture dynamic scenes and fast moving subjects. Weighing at approximately 485 grams (body only), the EOS 800D is a great option for photographers who enjoy the portability and convenience which comes with a lighter camera, while the touchscreen interface makes it easy for budding photographers to navigate the functionalities of the camera.

Oddly enough, the dial is on the right side, unlike in the 77D which is on the left.

EF-S18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM

Canon EF-S18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM; photo courtesy of Canon
The EF-S18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM is a compact lens that is significantly smaller than its cousins in the same class, making it the perfect kit lens for users concerned with bulk. Its focal length ranges from 29-88mm, covering the semi-wide-angle and mid-telephoto angles of view that are most convenient for travel and portrait photography.

Pricing and availability will be revealed at a later date. All photos courtesy of Canon Singapore.

Princess Cruises Now Offers Online Booking Services

I'm super glad to hear Princess Cruises yesterday launched online cruise booking services for Southeast Asia. Guests can research cruises and book online on their tablets, mobile phones or personal computers via www.princess.com

This is the first time that guests in Asia are able to do this with Princess Cruises directly. Guests in mature cruise markets such as North America, the United Kingdom and Australia are already able to book their cruises online.

“Since beginning homeport cruising from Singapore three years ago, we have seen an increase in the number of repeat cruisers and our website aims to attract these guests who will find our online booking services easy-to-use and interactive. The digital age has brought a surge in travel-related online activity and we believe Internet-savvy travellers in Asia are ready for a direct online booking capability,” said Farriek Tawfik, Director Southeast Asia, Princess Cruises.

Yes, I think we're ready too. I rather like the website's wealth of content, site organisation and ease of navigation. They show you essential information to help you make your decisions, such as stateroom comparisons, and clear outlines of what's included in the fare and what's not. You can also view shore excursion options, dining outlets, entertainment and recreational options as well as the other offerings on-board.

Guests also have the option of choosing the location of their cabins and view the fares for the various categories of cabins. Guests have three payment options: to hold the booking with no deposit; book with a deposit; or make payment in full.  Guests also have various payment options using their credit cards.

Mr. Tawfik stressed that guests still have the option of booking their cruises with their preferred travel agent who can help with more complex itineraries such as airline bookings, pre- and post-hotel accommodation, ground transportation and visa applications. First-time cruisers are also recommended to go through travel agents who will be able to answer queries by phone or face-to-face.

More and more global cruise brands are coming to Singapore. Princess Cruises is a global cruise line and tour company operating a fleet of 18 modern cruise ships. As the world’s largest international premium cruise brand, Princess carries two million guests each year to more than 360 destinations around the globe on more than 150 itineraries ranging in length from three to 114 days.

Meanwhile, the Princess Cruises' newest ship Majestic Princess (photo above) launches her maiden Europe season in April-May 2017. It's coming to Singapore, so check out the cruises involving this ship!

Recipe: Valentine's Day Cranberry Shortbread Cookies, Plus Giveaway

Nothing says love like a homemade cookie. And the best kind of love is the kind we show ourselves. Too often we are running around caring for others that we forget to prioritise our health. Putting ourselves first isn't a selfish thing, for how can we take care of others if we are not first of all in good health?

So in the spirit of loving ourselves, let's make Valentine's Day treats that benefit us!

I have two cranberry recipes for you: a shortbread cookie with easy ratio to remember (1 butter; 1 sugar; 2 flour) and a refreshing drink to go along with it!

Haagen-Dazs Little Gardens collection: Rose Raspberry Lychee and Elderflower & Blackcurrant

Häagen-Dazs™ is bringing back its limited edition Little Gardens collection that sold out within 3 months in 2016. This spring, the popular Rose Raspberry & Lychee flavour makes a return alongside a NEW flavour – Elderflower & Blackcurrant.

The packaging with themes of flowers and fruit is really pretty; it's designed by Kitty McCall, a London-based interior designer known for her bold and colourful artistry. The vivid and floral colours make it perfect for Valentine's Day.

Rose Raspberry & Lychee

Inspired by the sweet allure of the Ispahan Macaron, this flavour marries the combination of rose extract from Turkish roses, juicy handpicked lychees from Taiwan and the sweetest raspberries to create a fragrant ice cream with the perfect balance of rose and sweet fruit that will exhilarate the palate.

Elderflower & Blackcurrant (NEW)

This gently aromatic elderflower always reminds me of Sweden and IKEA. I have read that it is one of the oldest herbs cultivated by man. It's in syrups, drinks and desserts around the world.  Haagen-Dazs is marrying it with hand-picked succulent blackcurrants from France to craft a unique fruit and flowers ice cream combination.

Ethan Lim, Marketing Director of General Mills Southeast Asia commented, “The limited edition Little Gardens Collection was extremely well-received last year and we are very excited to indulge our Häagen-Dazs fans and ice cream lovers once again with these little luxuries of unique floral and fruity ice cream flavours and limited edition packaging.”

The pints are priced at S$14.50 and are available in all Häagen-Dazs™ outlets nationwide. Häagen-Dazs™ will also have a limited edition menu of in-store creations, including Elderflower Cake (S$39.00) Flower Fondue (S$ 45.90) and Flower Rhapsody (S$16.90).

The Elderflower Cake is available as a take-away option only. All items under the Little Gardens Collection are subject to GST and service charge where applicable and on a while stocks last basis.

CANON CP1200 SELPHY: Perfect Valentine's Day Gift for Photo-Lovers

Take your selfies to the next level - make them into real copies you can keep or share. The Canon SELPHY (how appropriate) CP1200 is a small yet versatile portable photo printer that lets you print directly from your mobile phone or laptop.

It's one of those things I at first thought I didn't need, but after trying it for a while, I really like the convenience of not having to go to a store to print out photos. You can print anything you want - family or party photos, anime/movie scenes, workout cards, scenery photos or just examples of great photography.

Colour adjustment can now be made directly on the printer’s user interface, minimising the editing process on the desktop PC or mobile devices. Other functions like colour balance, brightness, and digital photo smoothening can be adjusted for the desired effect. Settings can be saved for subsequent prints to retain the same look even after the printer is switched off.

The only drawback is, some prints seem a little darker and the certain colours were not as bright as seen on my iPhone or laptop. It's easily fixed by adjusting brightness and colours before printing.

Photo from Canon Europe website

An optional battery pack lets you power up the printer without relying on a power outlet. Wi-Fi capability lets you print instantly from cameras and smartphones at gatherings and parties, to create special mementoes for guests. You can get creative with a multitude of consumables – postcard, square-size printouts, auto-generated multi photo layout and even mini stickers.

The consumables are not too pricey either. I think S$39.90 gets you ink and paper for 108 photos measuring 4x6 inches (4R/100mm x 148mm).

Untitled
The SELPHY CP1200 uses dye-sublimation technology to create smooth gradations without any grainy feel. I would still recommend printing as high res as possible because you can see the amazingly fine detail on high res photos.

The photos are protected with a special film coating that protects from colour fading. This technology also makes the photograph resistant to water droplets and fingerprints.

There's also a Valentine's Day promo currently on Canon Shop where the printer is going for S$199.

Daessiksin 2-in-1 Korean BBQ and Hotpot Buffet at United Square

Craving both a steamy Japanese hotpot buffet and sizzling Korean BBQ buffet at the same time? You'll be glad to know you can get both for a song at the DaeSsiksin that has newly opened at United Square. (See end of post to win a promo code)

DaeSsiksin Korean Hotpot and BBQ Buffet here also offers the DANRO collagen hotpot buffet; both are names under Ministry of Food (MOF)'s huge stable of brands. MOF has a Japanese head chef looking after the Japanese broth recipes, sauces and delicacies, and a Korean chef in charge of the Korean dishes.

Untitled
Oh it's a veritable feast here, with so many things to choose from the buffet.

The BBQ grill they use is pretty impressive; the meats don't stick to it and you can easily just wipe off any charred marinade using tongs with tissue paper (supplied at the table).

Untitled
What's really attractive here are the unlimited servings of premium meats, including beef ribeye, karubi, sliced pork belly, bacon, and bulgogi marinated meats (beef, pork, chicken). There are also thinly sliced non-marinated meats suitable for the hotpot.

Untitled
These are items ideal for the hotpot - vegetables, mushrooms, noodles, tofu products, fishballs, fishcakes, noodles and the minced meat in "bamboo" tubes.

On the other side, you have a small salad bar.

Untitled
Customise your own sauces and dips - I love experimenting with different combinations. There's sesame sauce, peanut sauce, ponzu, soy sauce, ground chillies (not really spicy), scallions, garlic, ginger and so many condiments. But honestly, the meats are good enough on their own; you won't miss these very much!

Untitled
There's plenty of cooked food you can help yourself to while you wait for the meats to cook. These are also very useful for placating hungry kids while you pick your raw ingredients at the bar.

Untitled
What's really good from the cooked food section is the Bossam Pork. Slices of tender pork belly in a braising sauce so moreish, I would come back for these alone.

Daessiksin at United Square just started a 2-in-1 #buffet concept: Korean #BBQ and Japanese collagen #hotpot - great value with premium meats like beef ribeye and karubi. Weekday lunch is only $14.90 (adults); $8.90 (kids). There's cooked food, free flow
But the highlight really is having both Japanese hotpot and Korean BBQ at the same table - it's two buffets in one!

Melty #cheddar and #mozzarella #cheese dip ($3) at the Daessiksin Korean BBQ at United Square.
One thing they introduced here is the Cheese Dip ($3), a mix of cheddar and mozzarella in a metal bowl, which you can heat on the grill and dip items into.

Untitled
You can get creative at a Korean BBQ buffet with so many ingredients to play with. Make your own lettuce roll. Put some white rice on the grill and mix in kimchi stew and some BBQ meats to make your own kimchi rice. Some parents like to make porridge in the hotpot too.

Untitled
You have a choice of 8 soup bases specially created by the Japanese Head Chef: Pork Garlic Collagen, Spicy Pork Garlic Collagen, Chicken Collagen, Spicy Chicken Collagen, Sukiyaki, Tonkotsu, Mala and Tom Yum.

We tried the Mala which is a Japanese mala, not the Sichuan mala. It tastes more like a sweetly herbal soup than the spicy tongue-numbing broth.

You can see the chunks of semi-solid creamy broth literally melting before you in the pot. It almost looks like fat but this is mainly a rich broth made gelatinous by the collagen. Collagen itself is a translucent protein with no discernible taste. But eating collagen become popular in Japan as a "beauty" fad. Many Asians believe that eating collagen will help improve skin, so that's why these collagen pots are often called "beauty pots" as well.

Untitled
When the soup has been reduced, toss in some noodles or rice and let them soak up the intense flavours!

DANRO is also the first to launch a Japanese Collagen Hotpot Delivery for customers to enjoy in the comfort of home. You can choose from:
·         4 set menus from $78++ (2, 4, 6 or 8 pax)
·         Premium meats (chicken, pork or beef)
·         More than 30 assorted meats, prawn, vegetables, condiments along with beer and sake

Call 98228271 or 63831741 or drop by to place your order:
·         Waterway Point #01-32
·         JEM #01-16
·         Cathay Cineleisure Orchard #B1-08/09
Delivery charges are S$4/km (rounded down to the nearest 0.5km), up to a maximum of S$50.

Untitled
Families with kids will be glad to know there's free-flow ice cream too, in addition to free-flow drinks (hot Korean tea and soft drinks).

With prices starting from S$14.90 per adult and S$8.90 per child for lunch on weekdays, this is really a steal. Add on S$8 per table and you get the hotpot as well. The chain has been expanding quite rapidly; there are now 8 DaeSsiksin outlets and 4 DANRO outlets (the next ones will open end this month at Hillion Mall). I wish they would open near Katong too!
