Hotel Buffet at Oscar's: 55 Dishes for S$55 (Conrad Centennial Singapore)

There are so many celebratory feasts going on for National Day 2020 but Conrad Centennial Singapore is rolling out the red (and white) carpet this year with Oscar's 55 dishes for S$55. Check out the full menu here

Just tell them how many portions you want, and it will be served to your table. Unlimited servings and you don't even have to get up or walk.

From the Ice Bar, we tried:

  Ice Bar items

* Frutti di Mare seafood platter of oysters, snow crab, sea prawns and mussels, served with condiments: fresh and good. This is a portion for two persons.
* Smoked salmon with caper berries and lime: pretty standard
* European cheese platter: well, I had to try. No, I didn't get Camembert but there was a nice soft cheese (Brie) and a hard one I can't tell.

We also liked the Shiso Leaf Taco with Smoked Duck, Plum Sauce, Yellow Aioli and Togarashi. Quite the fusion creation, but one that works.

The Local Flavours section is where you'll find familiar favourites:

From bottom right:

Asian Roast Platter of Roast Pork Belly and Char Siew: crispy skin on the roast pork scores brownie points. Char siew nicely fatty but missing a deeper caramelisation.

Signature Steamed Otah-Otah, Egg and Tobiko: this luscious steamed egg with otah went so well with the rice that came with the other wok selections

Curry Chicken Kapitan with Roti Jala: this is very much Chinese style curry, almost like a laksa broth in that it's rich but not spicy

Just having multiple servings of this Singapore Chili Crab (served with deep-fried mantou) will give you hours of pleasure (or torture, if you dislike picking out the flesh).

55 Dishes Buffet at Conrad Centennial SingaporeThe Wok Tossed Sweet & Sour Pork with Steamed Rice and Sambal Petai with Egg Fried Rice (seems like Nasi Goreng) came in fairly generous portions. The amount of rice doesn't seem like much but might actually do you in (as we found out too late), so you might want to consider sharing.

From the Western Comforts section, we had:
55 Dishes Buffet at Conrad Centennial Singapore Roast Rib Eye, Cracked Pepper Jus, Mash
A generous portion (this is for one pax). Unfortunately the rib eye must have been sitting awhile as is typical at buffets; it had gotten a little dry and chewy.

55 Dishes Buffet at Conrad Centennial SingaporeDuck Confit, served with Boursin crepes, figs and berries jus.
Loved how the fruity flavours complemented the duck. I would have gone for a second portion happily.

55 Dishes Buffet at Conrad Centennial SingaporeSeared Scallop with Romesco, Asparagus and Herbed Crumbs
I can't resist scallops or romesco sauce, so this was a must-have.

Impossible Meat - Loaded Potato Skin, Pico de Gallo, Guacamole, Sour Cream, Tobiko
I like Impossible Meat; you can't tell it's not meat. This made a tasty snack.

We managed to squeeze in a few final selections.

From top to bottom:

Chicken Tikka Masala with Garlic Naan
This is chicken thigh cooked in a creamy tomato gravy with butter. The naan is really good.

Mock Salmon Poke
Impossible Meat again, this time a fish version, with edamame, corn, tomatoes and cucumber atop a bowl of rice. More on that later.

Oscar's Signature: Singapore Hokkien Prawn Mee
This is the soup version with a pleasantly delicate broth.

How is this mock salmon? It looks so real. The texture is a little like "jelly" but kudos, though, it is pretty close to the real thing. I suppose this way they make this completely vegetarian. We wished the rice used was more "sticky" or at least vinegared though.
Now Dessert takes up easily 20% of the menu with 12 items. At first I thought was too many. I prefer savoury items to sweet, but the desserts turned out to be a delightful surprise.

We picked about seven to sample. They looked so pretty!

Just look at how exquisitely crafted these bitesize sweeties are. From left to right:
Chendol Gula Melaka Mousse, Maple Walnut Cheesecake, Chocolate Royal Hazelnut Crunch. I loved all three.

The Signature Pandan Kopi 'O' Tiramisu, Milo Powder with Biscotti
That sounded like a mind-boggling mouthful at first. But wow, does this please the palate! Dunk the biscotti into the Milo-topped pandan sponge and scoop out some along with the black coffee soaked bottom. Mmmm. It's all so artfully presented in an edible chocolate cup too. Wish they would keep this on regular menu!

D24 Durian Puffs. Nuff said.

Honestly, you probably won't be able to try everything on the menu. I think we only did half and were defeated. We were eyeing the juices, cocktails and shakes on the Drinks Menu (separate charges) but shortly after eating, we had to go for warm tea instead because the food items are very filling! On the whole, really good value for the price, given the variety and quality.
