Hearty rice bowls in the heartlands? Yes, try Gobbowl's Japanese-inspired creations. These are also quite wallet-friendly compared to the rice bowls you get in the CBD. If you're working from home or near the Bukit Merah area, you're in luck. Let's check out the choices they offer.
Saigon Chic - S$7.90
Mixed Grains, Char-Baked Chicken Thigh
Spicy Bean Sprouts and Carrots
Onsen Egg, Spicy Green Sauce
We liked this one a lot, especially the juicy chicken thigh char-grilled with Vietnamese influences. It went so well with the beansprouts, onsen egg and spicy green sauce. I love how they get every egg perfectly executed and topped with tobikko.
Chicken Katsu Curry - S$8.90
Mixed Grains, Chicken Cutlet
Cabbage and Carrot Coleslaw
Onsen Egg, Japanese Curry with Vegetables
This was one of our favourites. It's a sure winner with the kids.
Something Fishy - S$9.90
Japanese Udon, Char-Baked Teriyaki Salmon
Char-Grilled Chinese Cabbage and Spinach
Onsen Egg, Black Pepper Sauce
I liked the salmon but somehow feel this would have been better with rice, even though udon seems a natural pairing, and I've already had so much rice in the other dishes. And I even usually prefer noodles to rice. Very odd. But I do like their rice - plump short grain white mixed with brown rice.
Yes! Sir-loin - S$10.90
Mixed Grains, Grilled Beef Sirloin Steak
Roasted Medley Vegetables
Onsen Egg, Black Pepper Sauce
Mmmmh, this was our other top favourite. The steak is absolutely tender and done medium style. The roasted vegetables were the perfect complement too.
Belly Good - S$7.90
Mixed Grains, Braised Pork Belly
Char-Grilled Chinese Cabbage and Spinach
Onsen Egg, Donburi Sauce
Oh the pork belly is seriously good, per its name. I didn't care much for the Chinese cabbage but the pork is something you would want a full portion of!
Suki-Gyu - S$10.90
Mixed Grains, Donburi Sliced Beef
Sweet Corn, Edamame, and Charred Carrots
Onsen Egg, Donburi Sauce
This was okay. Slightly on the sweet side.
Garden Salad - S$7.90
Garden Mixed and Mixed Grains, Tempura Beancurd
Char-Grilled Tomato and Cucumber Salad
Sweet Corn, Edamame and Charred Carrot
Honey Mustard Vinaigrette
This is quite a pleasant choice for vegetarians. Maybe even vegans since it has no egg. Loved how the agedashi tofu provided satiation.
Mala Pork Lah - S$7.90
Mixed Grains, Grilled Sous-vide Mala Pork Coral
Sweet Corn, Edamame, and Charred Carrots
Onsen Egg, Szechuan Mala Sauce
The only dish that we would tweak would be this one. The mala seasoning can be too intense when slathered only on the pork. I would mix it all up with the rice first, so the flavour is more evenly distributed and pleasant to eat.
You also can
Create Your Own (CYO) bowl. Here we have a pasta with mixed vegetables, onsen egg and sausage. Very nice. My girls slurped this up in no time.
I'm glad to see more affordable Japanese-style bowls popping up. These should prove quite popular with the working crowd. While I don't see options for CYO on their own website, you should be able to customise your own orders on
Grab and Deliveroo.
